Setting the screen timeout is an easy way to tame unnecessary battery drain on your Android phone. However, if you set the value too low, your screen will turn on more often than necessary. How long to keep your smartphone screen lit before it turns off is a tough decision.
In this survey we wanted to know what Android Authority Readers opted for their screen timeout time. Here’s what you told us:
How long is your screen timeout set?
Results
We gave readers seven common options between 15 seconds and more than 10 minutes, and just under 2,900 votes were cast across the board. Interestingly, there is no clear winner.
The option, which received the lion’s share of support, received only 130 votes more than its closest competitor. A screen timeout of 30 seconds is supported by 26.6% of voters. A minute interval is also the preferred choice of 24.2% of readers.
Readers’ votes also tended to have shorter timeouts, with 15 seconds being the preferred choice of 10.4% of voters. Overall, however, more than 67% of readers opt for a screen timeout between 30 seconds and two minutes. This compared to just 6.4% of readers who set their screen timeout to more than 10 minutes.
Here’s what you had to say
- HelloThere: One minute. Enough time so that it doesn’t turn off while reading, but enough to turn off if I accidentally leave it on.
- Kristopher Hawkins: I set mine to 30 seconds, but sometimes it needs to be changed. Have you ever tried following a recipe of a phone that turns off after 30 seconds? This is not fun!
- jackson ombati: I think phone screen timeout over 30 seconds is a potential security risk.
- Main skeptic: I’ve set my phones to one minute of screen time 99% of the time, but the auto-lock time is set to 10 minutes since I am a home body.
- 2Star Hoodlum: One of the first things I do is to put it on never. Why should you leave it on? Tap the power button or tap the screen twice to sleep or wake up as needed.
- Fredrik Seglem: “Leave the screen on while looking at it” or “Smart Stay” has been a feature for years. So 15 seconds for me.
- Bojan Tomic: I keep it at 30 seconds, but sometimes it’s a little too short while 1 minute is too long. I wish there was a 45 second option.
That’s it for this poll. Thank you for your votes and comments. If you have any other comments about your screen timeout setting or the results of this survey, please drop them below.
