The best Paramount Plus movies

Publisher’s Note: This list will be updated as more Paramount Plus movies are added to the service.

A Quiet Place / A Quiet Place Part II

One of Paramount Pictures’ biggest hits in 2018 was A Quiet Place. Co-written, directed and starring John Krasinski, this film depicts a family after an unknown species suddenly appears on earth and almost completely exterminates the human population. The creatures target their prey using sounds and they are incredibly fast and deadly. The film uses its audio design and performances by Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe to portray a family that must be silent to survive.

Three years later (delayed by a year due to the Covid-19 outbreak) we finally got A Quiet Place Part II. This sequel, which debuted in theaters on Paramount Plus 45 days after its release, dates back to around the Origins of the event can be seen, and then moves in time until shortly after the end of the first film. The sequel focuses on Simmonds’ character as she tries to find food and water for her other family members, leading to an expansion of this very different earth. Both films are very exciting, but also very emotional.

Mission Impossible 3

Mission Impossible 3 Paramount Plus movies

Tom Cruise helped turn the 1960s spy television series Mission Impossible into a movie franchise. Paramount now has six very successful films in the series (at least two more are planned). One of the best in the franchise is Mission Impossible III, released in 2006, which humanizes IMP agent Ethan Hunt. He wants to marry a nurse, Julia Meade (Michelle Monaghan), who is unaware of his true past and current career. Things get out of control, however, when Hunt and his IMP team try to stop an evil arms dealer (Philip Seymour Hoffman) who wants to get their hands on a mysterious and dangerous object known only as “Rabbit’s Foot”.

JJ Abrams, who helped create successful TV shows such as Felicity, Alias and Lost, made his feature film directorial debut with this film. However, the film looks and moves like it was made by a director with decades of experience. There are some incredible action set pieces and some nice twists along the way. It is certainly one of the best Paramount Plus movies out there.

You can also check out all of the other Mission Impossible movies on Paramount Plus.

Star Trek Beyond

This is by far the best Star Trek feature film on the Kelvin Timeline. The 2016 release features the crew of the USS Enterprise in what could easily have been made a standard Trek TV episode. The ship is sent to rescue a crashed ship on an unknown planet. However, Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the crew soon fight for their lives, and ultimately for the life of the Federation’s nearby Yorktown space station. Thanks to a big budget, some great space battles, and a bit of humor between the cast, it saves the material in a way that sets this film apart from a typical Trek TV show.

Galaxy Quest

Galaxy Quest

The best Star Trek movie of all time may not be a Star Trek movie. Instead, it could be this 1999 hit Sleeper that serves as both a satire on Star Trek and an investigation into how fandom actually affects people in Trek and other similar franchises. Tim Allen leads the cast as an actor on a remote science fiction series that still has a small but highly motivated fan base. He and the other actors on the show spend their days going to conventions and store openings. However, when Allen’s character is contacted by an alien race who believes the Galaxy Quest episodes are real, he and his other “crew members” must save this race from extinction by another hostile alien force.

Yes, the film is extremely fun and spot on when it comes to exploring some aspects of science fiction fandom. However, it also suggests that shows like Star Trek can really affect some people’s lives for the better.

World War Z

Brad Pitt stars in this film that offers a new take on the zombie genre. Pitt plays a former troubleshooter for the United Nations. When he and his family get into the dawn of a zombie apocalypse, he is recruited to get back to work to find the source of the outbreak. The visual effects of the zombie horde are still pretty spectacular, but the movie gets really interesting in the final third when Pitt tries to figure out a way for humans to avoid the attacks of the undead.

Paramount Plus also has some classic Paramount movies in its library. One of the best is this 1953 romantic comedy. Audrey Hepburn won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the film. She plays a princess from a nameless European country who visits Rome. She decides to leave her guardians and makes her way to the city, where she meets an American reporter, played by Gregory Peck, and they spend an unforgettable day in Rome together.

This is an old fashioned romance, literally. This film has been referenced many times from other romantic comedies, and

The wolf on Wall Street

This 2013 film has reunited director Martin Scorsese with actor Leonardo DiCaprio. DiCaprio plays a version of Jordan Belfort, a real-life stockbroker who got rich by selling overrated penny stocks to unsuspecting customers. However, the amount of fraud and other crimes caused by Belfort and his teammates soon caught the attention of US federal agents. It’s a story about how corruption can end up getting you, no matter how rich you get. This film also has a star-making performance of Margot Robbie as Belfort’s wife.

The SpongeBob movie: Sponge on the run

You must have something for the kids on this list of the best Paramount Plus movies, and that’s why this movie (a Paramount Plus original made in the US) is here. SpongeBob SquarePants continues to be a hit with children (and many adults, too). In his third feature film, in full 3D CGI animation, Spongebob goes to the ocean version of Las Vegas, along with some flashbacks to his childhood in Kamp Koral. You also get some unique cameos from other actors in this movie, including the always great Keanu Reeves.

Twilight Boulevard

Sunset top plus

It really is one of the best movies of all time. This 1950 classic was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won for Best Screenplay, Best Score, and Best Black and White Art Direction. It begins memorably with the death of the male lead, played by William Holden. However, he manages to tell the rest of the film in a flashback. Holden’s character is a screenwriter looking for work. He drives to a large mansion where Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) lives. A former silent film actress, she is recruiting Holden to write a script for her big comeback. After that, it gets dark and complicated.

Console Wars

Another original from Paramount Plus, this superb 2020 documentary takes a look at the video game industry in the early 1990s. Previously, Nintendo ruled the console game world with its SNES, but Sega decided to bring out a rival console, the Genesis, which took the world by storm and also introduced it to a great new game mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog. This film describes the battle between Nintendo and Sega in the early 1990s to rule the game console industry.

Paramount Plus Movies Honorable Mentions

Here are a few Paramount Plus movies that didn’t quite make our top list

  • The Addams family – This movie adaptation of the “crazy and crazy” family is still extremely funny.
  • choice – Reese Witherspoon is perfect in this satire on the school’s popularity.
  • The rock school – Jack Black goes all out as an unemployed rock musician who trips his way to teach kids how to rock yourself.
  • Sin city – This is a stylish adaptation of Frank Miller’s crime comics with some great performances.
  • 28 days later – Yeah, it’s another zombie movie, but it’s not a real zombie movie either. Just look at it.
