What is the Hawkeye Show about?

Hawkeye at Disney Plus

It’s not entirely clear what Hawkeye will be about, but Disney and Marvel have released some information.

In the main plot of the show, Clint Barton / Hawkeye will work with and mentor a young archer. Kate Bishop, also nicknamed Hawkeye, will be Clint’s protégé and may eventually replace him in the Avengers.

That being said, the Hawkeye show is likely to follow as Clint reconnects with his wife and children after the events of Avengers: Endgame, where he spent five years apart from them when they were wiped out by Thanos in “the Snap”.

When and where can I watch Hawkeye?

Hawkeye Avengers Endgame 2

Hawkeye will be available exclusively on Disney Plus when it premieres on November 24th.

The first season of Hawkeye on Disney Plus will be eight episodes, with the finale airing on January 12, 2022.

Previous MCU series on Disney Plus came out on Fridays. After WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Disney switched to Loki and What If …? for Buckel Day.

Who is on the Hawkeye Show?

Hailee Steinfeld

In addition to longtime Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner, Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit, Bumblebee) is called, um, Hawkeye. Steinfeld plays the Kate Bishop incarnation of Hawkeye.

Another familiar face will be Florence Pugh, who repeats her role of Black Widow as Yelena Belova, Black Widow’s adoptive sister.

Bishop’s wealthy mother is played by Oscar-nominated Vera Fermiga. Other actors include Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Zahn McClarnon and Brian d’Arcy James.

The new Hawkeye show will also serve as an introduction to Maya Lopez, known as Echo, who will lead her own show on Disney Plus at a later date. Newcomer Alaqua Cox will play Echo, a Deaf Native American heroine in Marvel Comics who can reflect the skills and fighting styles of her opponents.

Behind the camera, Rhys Thomas and the duo Bert and Bertie direct the eight episodes, with Mad Men’s Jonathan Igla as the scriptwriter and showrunner.

Where did we stop

Hawkeye at Disney Plus

Originally a member of SHIELD and a founding member of The Avengers, Hawkeye has a long history with Natasha / Black Widow, the two who worked side by side for years before the other MCU heroes emerged.

In his last two appearances, Clint initially opposed the Sokovia Accords of the American government and was placed under house arrest after the events of Captain America: Civil War. Then we saw him in Avengers: Endgame Fighting Thanos. After losing his family on the Snap, Clint went AWOL and murdered criminals around the world until he had a chance to bring back his wife and children.

While he was trying to sacrifice himself instead of Natasha, she ultimately defeated him, so we’re going to catch up with a Clint who is likely plagued with the guilt of a survivor in Hawkeye.

Other upcoming MCU series include Ms. Marvel, which will go to streamer in late 2021. Armor Wars, Secret Invasion, Moon Knight, She-Hulk, Ironheart, and a show set in Black Panthers Wakanda are all in the early stages of preproduction.

Who is Kate Bishop?

Hawkeye Kate Bishop

Bringing Kate Bishop into the community will likely help the series grow Clint’s character beyond being friends with Nat and a typical family man. It could also mean Clint is on the way and will be replaced by Kate in later MCU titles.

Kate is the daughter of a wealthy family in the comics. After a clash with the Avengers, she becomes a young counterpart to Hawkeye, mastering archery and other forms of combat. In later comics, the two Hawkeyes work side by side on an equal footing.

Her inclusion on a Hawkeye show on Disney Plus is likely to provide some kind of origin story as she will be a protégé of the existing Hawkeye.

Kate Bishop is just one of several members of Marvel Comics’ Young Avengers who have already been introduced to the MCU. Ant-Man’s daughter Cassie, Wanda and Vision’s sons, Tommy and Billy, and child Loki were all on the team at some point in the comics. Another Young Avenger from the comics, Ms. Marvel, will also get her own show before appearing in a sequel to Captain Marvel.

We don’t know if Disney and Marvel will try out a Young Avengers title at some point, but they certainly get the pieces in place if they do.

What to Expect from Hawkeye at Disney Plus

Hawkeye Avengers

Disney and Marvel have kept details of the Hawkeye series pretty quiet. Even the assumption that the series takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame could turn out to be false. Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain Marvel, and Black Widow all took place years or even decades before their place in the MCU’s chronological order.

But we actually know a lot about Hawkeye. And we can put together some solid theories on top of that. Below are a few things to expect from Hawkeye on Disney Plus:

  • Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has suggested that the show will explore part of Barton’s time as a ronin, his cloak while hunting down villains in Avengers: Endgame. Whether this means the entire show is a prequel to the events of Endgame or includes flashbacks or other narrative means from the MCU’s “present” perspective remains to be seen.
  • Set photos show Jeremy Renner wearing what appears to be a hearing aid. In Marvel Comics, Hawkeye is losing his hearing, so it seems the series will feature a version of Hawkeye as a deaf hero. This is being pursued with the involvement of Echo, another canonically deaf hero.
  • Kate Bishop walks a dog who looks a lot like Clint’s own dog in the comics, known as Lucky the Pizza Dog.
  • The images released by Disney reflect the aesthetics of Matt Fraction and David Aja’s 2012–2015 Hawkeye comic run. This version of Hawkeye featured Kate Bishop and Clint’s deafness. This also included the “Tracksuit Mafia” that were the original owners of Lucky the Pizza Dog.
  • Florence Pugh’s inclusion could point to a bigger role for actress Little Women and Midsommar within the MCU. Clint and Natasha were very close, and Pughs Yelena is said to be the next incarnation of the Black Widow personality.
  • A Black Widow post-credit scene also reveals that Yelena worked with Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who was also featured in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Pugh’s involvement could mean Julia Louis-Dreyfus will also appear as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine in Hawkeye.
  • Since Yelena was absent from Natasha’s death, we will likely see some kind of confrontation between her and Clint. As the last person to see Nat alive, Clint may at least have the answers she needs.
  • Marvel has revealed that Fra Fee plays a character named Kazi. This could be short for Kazimierz Kazimierczak, who is a mercenary villain known as a clown in the comics.
  • Tommy Dalton plays Jack Duquesne, probably a Jacques Duquesne game. Duquesne is known as a swordsman in the comics. He was sometimes a friend and sometimes an enemy of Barton, and he was an early mentor to Hawkeye.

That’s all we (and a few things we don’t know) know about the Hawkeye show on Disney Plus. In November you can see for yourself.
