There was some confusion when the Juice Pack Connect was announced last week. I admit I was a little confused too. It was undoubtedly close too Apples The launch of the iPhone 12, which leads many (understandably) to assume that the new version of Mophie’s case will be based on the cellphone’s new MagSafe technology.
While it’s likely that a future version of the accessory will offer this functionality, the truth is that there are two main technologies at the heart of the newer, more modular battery: wireless charging and good, old-fashioned glue. This means, among other things, that the system will work effectively with any handset that supports Qi wireless charging.
In fact, the system is quite bare in nature. There isn’t even a case in the box. You have to supply your own. Instead, the system comes with the battery pack, a handle / stand and two adapters. That last bit is nice in case you need a makeover or plan to share the battery with someone else.

Installation is pretty easy. There is even a little cardboard guide to make sure you center it correctly, a kind of frame you would get to install a screen protector. You can also install it directly on the back of the phone, but I prefer to go with my accessories with no commitment whenever possible. That said, you’ll have to live with the little adapter button on the back of your device when no other accessory is attached.
The accessory is pushed onto the anchor from the side. The battery is easily the prettiest part of the entire rig – and the one that best keeps the design language of the original juice packs. The ring / stand feels a little cheaper and feels like an afterthought to occupy the system when not charging. One of the big drawbacks is that the more compact battery design means less capacity. 5,000mAh isn’t bad, but you can find a higher capacity case cheaper.

The other tradeoff that you probably already know is that wireless charging is slower than wired charging. Because of this, the system is better at keeping your device alive for long stretches than quickly charging it. That said, if you’re really in need and have the right cables on hand, you can charge your phone faster using the USB-C port (which is also used to charge the battery).
The Connect Stand can be serviced. It doubles as a stand rather than a handle. It would be useful if the company offered something more like a pop socket for a firmer grip. That’s the beauty of modularity – you can always add more accessories. At $ 80, it’s not cheap, but Mophie products never really are.
