Hacker brings Google Maps to 8-bit Nintendo console
TL; DR
- A hacker ported all Google Maps to a modified Nintendo Entertainment System.
- The end product is an 8-bit world map.
- The hacker used several other NES / Map mods as a starting point.
Do you remember how google had April Fools joke every year? One of those jokes was the announcement (back in 2012) of an 8-bit version of Google Maps that you can use on a Nintendo Entertainment System. Funny joke, right?
Obviously, this NES isn’t your standard plan. It’s connected to the internet (which barely existed when the NES peaked) and has several other mods. But it renders Google Maps in 8-bit designs, which makes our world look like something out of Dragon Warrior or the very first Final Fantasy.
In the mirrored video above, you can see how the hacker put everything together. They had plenty of inspiration, including a modder who did a similar feat with Bing and another who brought the original Doom to an NES. They end up traversing our world with an NES controller, which is pretty awesome.
