TL; DR

  • Google One’s VPN is now available in select markets outside of the US.
  • The new locations include Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain and the UK.
  • This feature is only available to Google One subscribers of 2TB (or greater).

Google One’s VPN has only been available in the US since the service launched last year. Google has now rolled out the service in a handful of new locations including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, and the UK. However, some restrictions remain, including the fact that if you travel outside of these countries you will no longer be able to use the VPN.

Second, this benefit is only available to Google One subscribers on the 2 TB (or higher) plan. If you haven’t already and want to sign up, the Google One plan with 2TB of storage will get you $ 9.99 every month or a discounted annual price of $ 100. Also note that the VPN is only available on Android devices. Google mentioned that it would eventually provide Windows, Mac, and iOS support during startup, but didn’t offer an exact schedule.

The Google One VPN was rated “robust” security by an independent but commissioned review earlier this year, with Google addressing most of the issues raised immediately. That said, the high-level Google One subscription requirements and lack of device support keep the VPN on par with what it was before. It’s a useful perk for subscribers, but not a mainstream VPN contender, even if it’s available in a few more locations.

If you’re not looking for cloud storage, have all your devices covered, and use a VPN everywhere, there are plenty of great third-party VPNs you should consider instead.
