Google’s Pixel 5a with 5G adds water resistance, a bigger battery and a headphone jack – ProWellTech
It’s no secret that Google is in the middle of a pretty massive overhaul of its Pixel division. The Pixel 6 offers the next big Hail Mary for the company’s hardware division, complete with its own custom chip, Tensor.
This is not that. The new flagship won’t be available until the fall. In the meantime, here is the 5a, the latest addition to the “budget flagship” line, which has proven to be an overall nice boost to sales for a troubled department.
Google confirmed the phone’s existence back in April, mainly to contain rumors predicting the phone’s unannounced death. “Pixel 5a 5G will not be canceled,” the company told ProWellTech at the time. “It will be available in the US and Japan later this year and is announced in line with the launch of the a-series phone last year.”
And here it is indeed. The handset will officially go on sale on August 26th for $ 449. The Pixel 5a with 5G is, in a word, “safe” – a fact highlighted by the recent announcement of the Pixel 6. By no means is this a phone made by a company keen to shake things up, but rather the remnants of a department that was happy to be playing right in the middle of the smartphone wars. Safe is not a bad word – especially not at this price. It’s sturdy (now with IP67 water resistance!) And will do the job.
As the name suggests, 5G connectivity is included in the price. That’s paired with a dual camera – with the same 12- and 16-megapixel setup as the Pixel 5. These perform a number of software-activated modes, including night vision, live HDR +, and portrait light. The phone is powered by the same Snapdragon 765G mid-tier process while the memory has been reduced to 6GB.
The memory is the same at 128 GB and, interestingly, the battery has been increased from 4080 mAh to 4680 mAh. The screen has also been expanded from 6.0 to 6.34 inches with the same resolution. There’s no wireless charging on the Pixel 5, but hey, there’s a headphone jack.
The Pixel 5a with 5G is available for pre-order starting today.
