Google’s faster, simpler Wear OS update starts rolling out

  • Google has started releasing its Fall Wear OS update.
  • The upgrade increases performance, extends battery life and simplifies pairing.
  • It is only available for the Suunto 7, other smartwatches will come later.

Google keeps its promise to release the Wear OS update for fall 2020 as soon as Android 11 becomes available. However, depending on your smartwatch, you will likely need to be patient. The upgrade has been introduced and focuses more on improving the fundamentals like speed and durability than rethinking the user interface.

Most importantly, performance should be better across the board. Google claims that the app’s startup and startup times are up to 20% shorter. You can also expect longer battery life, although the company wasn’t willing to commit to specific numbers – it likely depends on your particular model.

There are still a few noticeable changes. The pairing process is faster, more reliable, and may give you a better introduction to your new bracelet clothing. Further changes this fall will ensure a more understandable weather experience, a hand washing timer to cope with the pandemic and a more “intuitive” control of the watch modes and training units.

Just don’t expect to get the Wear OS Fall Update right now. The new software will reach Suunto 7 smartwatches first and will come to other devices in the “coming months”. It may take a while for your watch to reach this speed and battery level.

The 2020 version is cautious even compared to some minor Wear OS updates. Whether resources are tight for the pandemic or Google is focused on Fitbit, it won’t be big enough to rethink buying a Galaxy Watch. However, it will get more out of a Wear OS watch you already own and could be especially appealing when watches arrive with Qualcomm’s faster Snapdragon Wear 4100.
