Google updates G Suite for mobile with dark mode support, Smart Compose for Docs and more – ProWellTech
Google today announced a major update to its G Suite mobile productivity apps.
These updates include adding a dark theme for documents, sheets, and transparencies, adding Google’s Smart Compose technology to documents on mobile devices, and the ability to edit Microsoft Office documents without obscuring them. Other updates include a new vertically scrollable slide display in slides, link previews, and a new user interface for comments and action items. You can now also reply to comments about your documents directly in Gmail.
For the most part, these new features are now available for Android (or will be in the coming weeks) and later available for iOS, although Smart Compose is immediately available to both, while Link Preview actually debuts for iOS. with Android comes later.
Most of these additions simply bring existing desktop features to mobile devices. For example, Google has generally introduced new G Suite tools.
The new dark theme will surely get some attention as it is a long time coming and users are now essentially expecting this in their mobile apps. Google argues that it not only spares your eyes, but also “keeps your battery alive longer” (although only phones with an OLED display really see a difference there).
You are probably familiar with Smart Compose, which is already available in Gmail and Google Docs on the web. As everywhere, it will try to finish your sentence for you. Given that typing on mobile devices is still more of a problem, it’s certainly a welcome addition for those who need to regularly write or edit documents on the go.
Even if your company is fully committed to G Suite, someone will likely still send you an Office document. G Suite was already able to process these documents on the web without conversion. The same technology is now coming to mobile devices. It’s a handle function, although I’m mostly surprised that it wasn’t available on mobile devices before.
For the rest of the new feature, be sure to respond to comments directly from Gmail. Last year Google launched dynamic email on the web. I’m not sure if I’ve really seen too many of these dynamic emails – using AMP to bring dynamic content to your inbox – but Google is now using this feature for Docs. “Instead of receiving individual email notifications when you are mentioned in a comment in” Documents “,” Sheets “or” Slides “, Gmail now displays a current comment thread where you can reply or fix the problem Comment directly in the message, ”explains the company.
