Verily, Google parent Alphabet’s life science branch said Monday that it’s working with Rite Aid to open his Corona virus Screening website for the first time outside of California, Expansion to eight new states.
On the website launched last month, users can conduct a screener survey to determine if they should go to test stations for COVID-19. As part of the expansion, the tool will now help send people to Delaware, Idaho, Michigan, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia for testing. Rite Aid is working with the Ministry of Health and Human Services to operate the test sites.
On Monday, Verily said the site had screened more than 150,800 people since April 24 and made it easier for more than 19,500 people to test.
The expansion takes place because experts see the widespread availability of tests as a crucial component for the reopening of the US economy. This includes ensuring that enough tests are available for healthcare workers and for people who have symptoms of the virus.
Verily’s screening website is one of several projects by Silicon Valley giants to help alleviate coronaviruses. Google and Apple have teamed up Offer contact tracking tools. The effort enables health authorities to create apps that use signals from people’s phones to warn them when they have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for the disease.
However, Verily’s screening website has been reviewed by lawmakers. In order to use the online screener, users must log in using a Google account. In the past few weeks, a group of democratic senators has pushed Verily on the subject. Earlier this month, Verily indicated that the requirements will remain for security and authentication reasons.
