Intelligent haptic audio feedback is coming to Android 12. The new API, first discovered in early developer builds, enables developers to create vibration patterns that correspond to audio output on supported devices. According to rumors, the Google Pixel 6 will be one of those devices.
According to XDA developer‘Mishaal Rahman, Google’s next flagship line, will support this feature and add more intelligent vibration patterns to ringtones. While this seems to be Google’s primary focus, there is evidence that the API can be used for other audio sources. This includes games and, interestingly, music playback.
The Pixel 6 Pro’s rumored dual stereo speakers make the latter view more mesmerizing. It’s a possible indication that Google is taking the phone’s audio credentials seriously. In conjunction with this intelligent feel, the Pixel 6 Pro could become a powerful pocket boombox.
However, Rahman doesn’t think Google will use this feature to improve music. Instead, it seems that Google’s goal is to generate more ringtones. Understandably, apps would also have to support the API in order to use them. However, the option is there.
While the API is available in Android 12, OEMs will likely need to include the haptic hardware required to use it. Don’t be too surprised if Google’s next flagship device is the first to show this feature.
