  • The Google Pixel 5 has reportedly had unrecoverable volume issues.
  • Some users say that while watching videos, the volume drops randomly.
  • Others report that the phone is getting too loud and the volume controls are not working.

Several Google Pixel 5 users are having problems with the phone volume. You checked the official Reddit and Google support forums to find that the Pixel 5’s volume controls are messed up.

There seem to be two different problems with the phone. Some users have found the volume drop randomly while playing videos, while others report that it gets too loud for notifications, screenshots, camera shutter, and other system sounds. The latter seems to be a more common problem, and adjusting the volume controls doesn’t help fix the problem.

“I first noticed that when I recorded a voice message on WhatsApp. Touching and releasing the microphone resulted in very loud noises. I tried the same thing in the native messaging app that came with the phone. While the sound is nowhere near as uncomfortable, it’s still overly loud and ignores my volume settings. Perhaps the most obvious example is the tone of the screenshot. Those things are loud and I don’t care what I do with my volume controls, ”writes one angry Pixel 5 user.

Apparently the only way to turn down the phone’s volume is to make it quiet or vibrate. Resetting the device to factory settings, as tried by some, doesn’t help either.

What has Google to say?

Complaints about the Pixel 5’s volume issues have increased over the past month or so. Users state that they have not had any success with Google support. However, a Google community specialist had this to say on the official forum thread:

With every new Pixel phone, we work to improve the volume to ensure customers don’t miss important calls and notifications. On Pixel, the ringtones and notification settings are linked, so these volume changes affect both settings. Thank you for your feedback on these settings. We will work to improve future updates for Pixel 5.

The answer is clearly lacking in that it doesn’t really address the problems users are facing. We hope Google reaches out to affected Pixel 5 users just like the phone’s screen gap issue.
