Google Photos’ new Android editor uses AI to help images pop
- Google introduces an update editor in the Photos app for Android.
- It offers AI suggestions for changes and more detailed manual controls.
- Portrait light on Pixels 4a 5G and Pixel 5 makes faces glow.
Not only did Google target Android fans with the Pixels 5 and 4a 5G at its Launch Night In event, but they also launched a brand new photo editor for Android that aims to improve snapshots for everyone, not just those with the latest devices.
The new Google Photos editor uses machine learning to suggest changes to images that you can apply with a tap. Some are simple touch-ups like Enhance, while others are eye-catching effects like Black and White Portrait or Color Pop. You can often see the specific changes made to a photo when you want to tweak the results.

You should be happy if you prefer manual changes. The updated Google Photos for Android has simpler, granular controls for things like brightness and saturation. Once you’re in the Customize menu, all that’s left to do is tap the effect you want and use a slider to make even minor changes.
There is a function that currently requires pixels 5 and 4a 5G. Portrait Light relies on machine learning to not only improve the quality of light in portrait photos, but also to change the angle and brightness. It even works for photos you took years ago, Google said. The feature is somewhat reminiscent of Apple’s portrait lighting effects on newer iPhones, with an emphasis on better control over effects.
The new Google Photos editor is now being introduced on Android devices. Portrait Light is “coming soon” to other Pixel phones. So don’t despair if you’re hoping for similar photographic tricks for your Pixel 4.
