Google Messages can now schedule texts for some users

  • Google introduces text scheduling in messages for Android.
  • You can choose to send messages on any day and at any time.
  • It works with simple text messages.

If you’ve always wanted Google Messages to send texts in the future, you might just get your wish. As XDA Reports that Twitter users Sai Reddy and others have discovered that Google is introducing the option to schedule texts in Android messages to save you the trouble of finding a third-party app.

If you have the capability, you can press and hold the Send key to set the date and time. Google offers some presets, but you can assign a custom schedule to messages if you have a specific moment in mind. Any text you queue will appear in your conversation as a “scheduled message” with a clock icon. You can tap it to change the content or timing.

Unlike some messaging features, this does not require an RCS conversation. You can use it with standard SMS chats.

It’s not sure how widespread the Google Messages scheduling feature could be, although it appears to reach users via a server-based update instead of a new app version. We asked Google for a comment.

It’s a simple addition, but it’s easy to see the appeal. You can set notifications for friends or send a declaration of love to a partner when they wake up in the morning. This can be especially useful for companies that want to set appointment reminders. If nothing else, it could save you from reaching for your phone at times when it would be impractical (if not impossible) to text a message locally.
