Google wants to make the app experience smoother across mobile devices and for all form factors and platforms like Wear OS, Android TV, Google TV, Android Auto, and more. To this end, the company has announced the Play Media Experience program.
The new initiative will enable developers to better integrate their apps with Google’s products and devices. The company says it will provide “additional opportunities for discovery and interaction” for developers with video, audio, or book publishing apps.
In particular, Google wants to promote the integration of video apps with Android TV, Google TV and Google Cast. This allows video apps to have a better and more uniform presence on all three platforms. Users would also benefit from smart content recommendations, improved content recognition, easier sign-ins, and more.
In addition, the company wants to better integrate subscription music and audio services with Wear OS, Android Auto, Android TV, and Google Cast in order to discover content and continue listening on devices.
To improve the reading experience on big screens, Google is also urging book app developers to optimize their apps for foldable and entertainment space on Android tablets.
Developers who sign up for the Play Media Experience program can take advantage of Google’s 15% service fee. The company said Android headquarters that this is not the same as the reduced app fee announced for smaller developers.
In fact, Google’s new program is aimed at apps that have over 100,000 monthly active installs on Google Play. You also need to have strong Google Play ratings, a flawless developer account, and more.
