Google Play Movies & TV will disappear from major smart TV platforms in the coming months. According to an official email to 9to5Googlethe app will no longer be available on Roku, LG, Samsung and Vizio Smart TVs.
The change will take place on June 15th. After that, users of the Play Movies & TV app will have to rely on YouTube to access their purchased content and purchase more movies.
Google announced the Google TV app last year, which will eventually replace Play Movies & TV entirely. That’s why the new Google TV UI in the updated Chromecast doesn’t have a Google Play Movies app either.
It appears that Google continues to provide access to Play Movies & TV on the Android TV platform, iOS, and Apple TV. For all of the other smart TV platforms mentioned above, Google states that previous purchases are available on YouTube’s Library tab in the Your Movies and Shows section. You need to sign in with the same account that you used in the outgoing app.
The company also states that Google Play credits can still be used on the YouTube app. Family Library content will also be available on YouTube, but purchases made through the app cannot be shared with families. However, you can purchase content from the Google Play Family Sharing website.
Google is also offering loyal customers a coupon code for a free movie worth $ 5.99.
