It has been a bit quiet on the leaflets lately, but many parties are still optimistic about the future of the form factor. Ahead of today’s big I / O prelude, Samsung (hands down the most bullish of the whole group) is released a number of metrics this morning, noticed,

The global outlook is equally impressive. This year alone, the market for foldable smartphones is expected to triple from last year – a year in which Samsung accounted for three out of four foldable smartphones shipped worldwide.

Part of expecting growth in this category is making sure the software is ready. Samsung has been tweaking things for a while, and on I / O in 2018, Google announced it would add support for foldable screens. Recent rumors suggest the company is working on its own foldable Pixel, but beyond that, it’s likely in the company’s best interest to make sure Android plays well with the form factor.

“We examined how people interact with large screens,” said the company in today’s keynote speech by the developers. This encompasses a variety of different aspects, including where users place their hands while using the device. This can happen anywhere with different applications in different orientations and form factors. Essentially, for example, you don’t want to put buttons where people generally place their hands.

The list of upgrades includes the ability to automatically resize content without stretching it excessively to fit multiple panels. All of these will no doubt be a learning curve as foldable files get into the hands of more users. But at least that signals Google’s persistent view of leaflets as a growing category. It’s also one of several updates the company is working more closely with Samsung on.

The two technology giants announced a joint game between Wear OS and Tizen earlier this morning.
