Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra-Fast Wireless Charging Screen

  • Xiaomi has announced its new 80W wireless charging technology.
  • It promises to charge a 4,000 mAh battery in just 19 minutes.
  • There’s no word on when the technology will go commercial, but we do expect it for the next Mi flagships.

Xiaomi is stepping up its wireless charging game. The company announced a new 80W wireless charging solution that promises to charge a 4,000 mAh battery in just 19 minutes. Do you need a quick 50% recharge? Xiaomi says you can achieve that in just over 8 minutes with the new technology.

Xiaomi’s previous record for fast wireless charging was 50W, which was introduced on the Mi 10 Ultra. When we tested the technology in our review of the phone, we were pretty impressed and were able to get a battery charge of 4,500 mAh in just over 40 minutes. So we look forward to what 80 W charging can do on upcoming Xiaomi phones.

A well-known tipster recently announced that smartphones with 100W wireless charging could play a role in 2021. Since Xiaomi has already reached 80W, the goal of 100W wireless charging doesn’t seem impossible. Xiaomi has not disclosed a schedule of when we can see the new wireless charging technology in action, but it will most likely showcase it on the next Mi flagships, also known as the Mi 11 series, early next year.

In the meantime, there is still the issue of battery degradation in such high-speed charging solutions. We haven’t tested this ourselves, but Oppo, one of the other major players using fast wired charging, admitted that its 125W charging solution drops the battery capacity to 80% after 800 charge cycles. We’ll have to wait and see how Xiaomi and other phone manufacturers address this issue.
