Game Boy games on Switch could land this month

TL; DR

  • A rumored Nintendo Switch Online update could allow you to play Game Boy games on the Switch.
  • Allegedly, the service should contain a small selection of Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles.
  • Unfortunately, it probably wouldn’t contain Game Boy Advance titles.

Starting today, your Nintendo Switch Online subscription gives you unlimited access to over 100 NES and SNES games. You play the games on your Nintendo Switch using official Nintendo emulators. They allow you to do things that you could never do on the original consoles, such as rewind, save anytime, and play with friends online.

In response to Nintendo life confirmed with own sources that Game Boy and Game Boy Color games are likely to hit the Switch very soon – possibly even this month.

The Game Boy was launched in 1989 and saw over 1,000 compatible games. The Game Boy Color was launched in 1998 and saw nearly 1,000 games during its lifespan (it also played most of the original Game Boy games). That means Nintendo could have nearly 2,000 games available for the Switch Online service.

However, this new aspect of the retro console service Game Boy Advance is unlikely to include titles. That’s not to say that it wouldn’t happen in the future, but it probably won’t happen this year.

You can already play a few Game Boy games on Switch, such as the original Final Fantasy Adventure, which is available in the Collection of Mana bundle. Keep this in mind, as the existence of these ports could mean you won’t see these games on the Switch Online service should this rumor prove true.
