Future Huawei phones could sport rear cameras arranged in a cross
- Huawei might consider a new design for its phones’ rear camera array.
- The design, discovered in patent applications, is reminiscent of D-pads on game controllers.
- The device also has an under-screen selfie camera and a headphone jack.
We got used to the recent Huawei camera array designs, which are usually in the form of strips, plates or circles. Now it seems that the company could experiment with a new shape.
Speckled by LetsGoDigitalThe telephone design shown in a patent application has a rear camera assembly arranged in a cross. It could easily be mistaken for a game controller’s D-pad, but no, these are definitely cameras and unfortunately not the genesis of a new Huawei gaming phone.
The camera array has four cameras on each end with a flash in the middle. The bottom lens appears to be a zoom lens as it is reminiscent of periscope camera setups we saw on previous Huawei phones.
The Chinese company has largely reserved periscope lenses for flagships, but the design of this phone is different from Huawei’s recent flagships.
There’s no waterfall screen to start with. It’s all flat in front, with a minimal but noticeable bezel around the display. There’s also a headphone jack at the top, which has become extinct on premium Huawei phones. These small design features could indicate that this is a mid-range device.
In any case, this will definitely not be the blueprint for the Huawei Mate 40 series. Previous leaks have indicated a similar design to the Mate 30 series with a circular rear camera.
Finally, there are a few other things to keep in mind: an under-screen selfie camera that was used in previous Huawei patents and on devices that should be more widely used now that the ZTE Axon 20 broke the ice.
As always, patent filings don’t necessarily result in mass production and widespread availability of a product, but this design probably has a better chance of getting publicity than the latest Huawei filings, including the completely insane Mi Mix Alpha-inspired device.
