TL; DR

  • Fossil is teasing a 6th generation smartwatch that promises “much faster”.
  • The company did not make any details.
  • The tease came just two days before the expected launch of Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4.

Fossil has a not-so-subtle way of undermining Samsung’s anticipated Galaxy Watch 4 launch: give potential buyers a second opinion. 9to5Google reports that users on Reddit and elsewhere received a fossil email indicating that the 6th generation smartwatch is “coming soon,” just days before Samsung’s August 11th Unpacked event .

Fossil Gen 6 Smartwatch Teaser

Fossil had previously suggested that an unnamed chip would improve performance, battery life, global LTE support, and health monitoring. There is no guarantee of a blood oxygen monitor or similar sensors, but these are growing all the time de rigeur when competitors like the Apple Watch Series 6 have had the technology for some time.

The company currently doesn’t let you do anything other than sign up for a notification when the 6th generation smartwatch is available for purchase. The intention is clear, however. Fossil hopes you can resist the urge to buy a Galaxy Watch 4 and instead wait and see if Gen 6 is worth it. Even if only a fraction of would-be customers bought the Fossil watch instead, it could spoil Samsung’s launch (albeit marginally) and fuel competition between Wear OS manufacturers.
