Fossil Gen 5 update removes dozens of watch faces

TL; DR
- A recent software update for Fossil Gen 5 inexplicably removed dozens of watch faces.
- If you’ve used one of the distant faces, your watch will use the default face instead.
- Fossil also appears to have added two new faces, but that hardly explains why so many more have been removed.
Recently, Fossil updated some of its watches through the usual Play Store system (via 9to5Google). The update appears to include two new watch faces: “Fitness Digital” and “Dashboard Digital”.
As nice as that is, the update also seems to have removed no fewer than 33 watch faces. This appears to primarily affect the Fossil Gen 5, but could also affect other models in this family such as the Fossil Gen 5E and their LTE variants.
The watch faces we saw removed are here:
- Big tic
- blue
- Candice Huffine
- Colorist
- compass
- Cory Richards
- Darryl Westly
- defender
- Ettore
- Flip digital
- Fred
- Grant
- KJ Apa
- Magic 8 ball
- Mandy Moore
- McKinney
- Mechanically digital
- Men’s fashion digital
- Minimal dressy
- Minimalist analog
- mood
- Movember
- Movember Analog
- Movember Digital
- Not a digital symbol
- P-51
- Rainbow
- robot
- roulette
- Sail dial
- Scarlet shimmer
- Speedometer
- Turntable
If you’ve used one of these faces on your Fossil Gen 5, you should see the default face instead. Of course, if you look for the face that you used before, it won’t be there anymore.
It appears that after this huge cleanup, there are only 24 dials left. Ouch.
It’s not at all clear why Fossil is sorting out so many faces. Maybe it has to do with the upcoming arrival of Wear OS 3? That seems like a possibility, but we know for sure that Wear OS 3 isn’t coming to the Fossil Gen 5 models. For now, the only way to find a new watch face is if you’ve lost your old favorite.
