Range fear. It’s the term that describes the terrible expectation that your electric car will run out of juice before you can plug it in anywhere. It is also one of the biggest obstacles to the introduction of electric vehicles in the US, as previous studies have shown.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E wants to reassure drivers about range. Ford said on Friday that its new Intelligent Range software will be the perfect companion to inform drivers with the most accurate data to calculate the actual remaining distance before getting a flat battery.
Frankly, it’s pretty fancy stuff. Intelligent Range takes crowdsourcing data from others Mustang Mach-E Vehicles on the road, adds local weather reports to the algorithm and examines the behavior of a driver behind the wheel to get an accurate distance. For those who have never had experience driving an electric vehicle, the calculated range can fluctuate quickly due to numerous elements. Starting the air conditioner, for example, can cause a range estimate to drop fairly quickly.
While the battery of the electric SUV reports how much energy is still available, the powertrain module keeps track of how much energy the drivers are consuming. Should an important matter cause Intelligent Range to recalculate things, drivers will receive a notification and an explanation of why the system has performed the new calculation.
And only as a backup does Ford Mustang Mach-E owners offer additional security if they run out of battery on the go. The automaker’s breakdown assistance program offers a free towing service to the nearest charging station, your home, or an EV-certified Ford dealer within 35 miles. If none of the options are within the radius, a tow truck will take them to the next option for free.
Intelligent Range is only getting smarter. That’s where the Mustang Mach-E runs Synchronize 4which includes Over-the-air update functionsFord plans to continuously update the system to provide drivers with the best information available.
