Most buyers don’t really need the performance associated with more expensive, powerful SUVs. But we understand you want to look cool. Many automakers have found success with visual updos for their otherwise quiet SUVs – think of Chevy’s RS modelsor in the luxury world BMW M sport Line. Ford is the latest to join this trend, and announced a new ST-Line package for the edge crossover on Tuesday.
The idea here is pretty simple: take any visual improvements to the full fat Edge ST However, leave the engine and chassis of the standard model in place. For this purpose, the Edge ST-Line gets a unique grille, body-colored bumpers, LED lights, 20-inch wheels and black exterior accents, all of which undoubtedly contribute to the curb’s appeal. However, under the hood is the same 2.0-liter I4 turbo engine with 250 hp as the standard Edge, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive is optional, as are larger brakes.
The Edge ST continues to offer a 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 with 335 hp and a somewhat stiffer chassis geometry. The Edge ST is a pretty strong thing; Ford says this crossover can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds.
Ford will offer the Edge ST-Line with a range of onboard technologies, including a Sync 3 multimedia system Apple CarPlay and Android Autoand the company’s Co-Pilot 360 suite with driver assistance functions, including parking assistant, adaptive cruise control and lane centering technology.
But the big reason to choose an ST line? Value. The Edge ST-Line costs a full $ 5,165 less than a comparable ST. So, if you don’t need the Big Boy ST’s 335-horsepower heart – and since Ford says only 13% of Edge sales are STs, logic says you probably won’t – the ST- Line to be a smart way.
