News app Flipboard continues to expand in video with Flipboard TV. The company’s curated video service first Introduced as a Samsung exclusive product earlier this yearLaunching today, the service will provide users with access to video from hundreds of publishers, including global publishers, local news publishers, and now select independent video producers.

Samsung Galaxy device owners will still have exclusive access to an upgrade to the premium, ad-free version of Flipboard TV. For everyone else, the service is financed by advertising.

Since today’s expansion, Flipboard has also formed a number of media partnerships that provide their video feeds to the Flipboard app. This list includes Complex Networks, Minute Media, A360 Media, Group Nine Media, The Recount, Bonnier Corp., Refinery29, Dow Jones, Hearst Magazines, Gannett, Vice Media Group, and Penske Media Corporation with brands such as Rolling Stone and Variety. Videos from Euronews, Tribune Publishing and dozens of others will also be available as part of a new partnership with VideoElephant, the company said.

In addition, Flipboard is bringing independent publishers such as filmmaker Gene Nagata (also known as Potato Jet) and video journalist Johnny Harris on board for the first time. These were integrated through the partnership between Flipboard and the influencer agency Spacestation Integrations. Other independent companies include Gary Vaynerchuk, the filmmaker of AudPop, and Underknown, producer of video series such as “What If” and “How To Survive”.

Despite expanding beyond traditional news publishing, Flipboard makes careful decisions about the quality of its video lineup.

“It’s not free for everyone,” says Claus Enevoldsen, Flipboard VP of Global Growth and Biz Dev. “We were very aware of the entire ecosystem and made sure what you see in For You weren’t wrong News are. They are trustworthy sources. That has always been our MO, and we are expanding that to include the video room, ”he explains.

The new video feeds will be available on a dedicated video tab in Flipboard’s content guide. The company says that with improved recognition capabilities and deeper integrations, it will make it easier for users to find videos to watch in the app. In addition to its content guide, 20 top-level topics now offer articles as well as video feeds, including travel, politics, local, lifestyle, sports, news and more. The videos will also play a bigger role in users’ “For You” feeds, which are a mix of editorial and algorithmic curation.

Users can also add video-only feeds to their own magazines if they prefer.

These videos will play natively in Flipboard for the first time. This helps activate Flipboard’s recommendation engine, which will direct you to related videos, the company said. This change also means users can use additional video controls, such as: B. those with which you can jump to the next video.

The new video effort also ties in with Flipboard’s recent additions to local news, which began in early 2020. As of June, Flipboard’s local coverage reached 50 cities in the US and Canada. Today there are 61. Now Flipboard users can also follow the video content of their favorite local news agencies right on Flipboard.

This shows what is often much cleaner than visiting the news publisher’s own app or website. Flipboard, meanwhile, offers its news partners an undisclosed revenue share that comes from advertising on their videos.

According to Flipboard, these ads will run as both pre-rolls and mid-rolls. This is the first time that pre-roll ads are running on its platform. The company believes that this will help meet publisher demand for high quality, brand-safe digital video experiences on mobile devices.

Initially, Flipboard is selling the ad inventory for the videos. However, the company intends to allow publishers to sell the inventory themselves later. (If the publisher already has an ad sales team to sell, they can move on.)

To promote their video content, publishers can also use Flipboard’s recently launched Storyboard feature, which are not algorithmic feeds but static collections of content they want to highlight.

“Today’s launch builds on the publisher ecosystem we’ve maintained for nearly a decade, our fundamental vision for content discovery, and our recent work around Flipboard TV,” said Mike McCue, Flipboard Co-Founder and CEO Begin . “The new native video player opens up new possibilities for new user experiences, partnerships and monetization. I expect to work with more developers and independent producers in the near future. “

The new features are rolling out today in the Flipboard app in the United States
