Buying a new smartphone, tablet, or laptop is complicated enough for many people. However, things get even more complicated when you want to buy a new USB-C cable and charger for your device or for transferring data. Today the USB Implementers Forum, which supports the various USB standards, approved packaging and product logos for the newer devices that support the latest advances.

The new logos should clearly show which cables support the new 240 W charging standard. Cables with this certification are mainly made to power new laptops. The logos, which will soon appear on new USB-C cable accessories, may indicate the 240W capabilities or the combined 240W charging power and data transfer up to 40Gbps that the cables support. A separate logo for certified 240W USB chargers is also available.

The new logos come just days after the European Commission proposed that all mobile electronic devices implement USB-C for the standard charging port. While this may take a while for this to become a reality, it is clear that those responsible for promoting USB-C want to make sure consumers know which cable or charger they are buying. This could make it easier for the EU to approve USB-C as a universal charging technology for mobile devices.
