- In order to better understand the US internet landscape, the FCC has launched its own speed test app.
- The FCC Speed Test App contains the usual tools, but offers some useful functions.
- It’s available for Android and iOS.
There’s no shortage of speed test apps, but the FCC has just launched another to detail American broadband coverage.
The FCC Speed Test App measures the performance of your internet connection. This also includes upload and download speeds, connection jitter, and latency. In that sense, it’s like any other speed test app before it. However, the Commission notes that this is not just a troubleshooting tool, it is also a tool for collecting performance metrics on the US Internet.
“T.In order to close the gap between digital haves and nots, we are working on creating a comprehensive, user-friendly data set on broadband availability“Said the acting chairman of the FCC, Jessica Rosenworcel, in a press release (h / t XDA developer). It is also an important mandate for the FCC. With 5G availability mostly limited to urban centers in the US, rural connectivity remains incomplete at best.
What else does the FCC Speed Test App offer?
There are some smart inclusions in the app, however. If you have a restricted data plan, you can limit the amount of cellular data used by the test. A test planner is also included, which enables regular surveys in the background. The app also notifies users when a test is in progress. The FCC also states that only user data related to the connection itself will be collected.
The FCC Speed Test App is available on Google Play and the App Store for iPhone and iPad users. You can download the appropriate version for the operating system of your choice below.
