Allison Tolman is perhaps best known for her Emmy Award-nominated role as Deputy Molly Solverson in the first season of Fargo on FX. She shared the screen with people like Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton, who were some of the first movie stars to work between film and television series. In an interview in the “I’m so obsessed” podcast for CNET, Tolman said that working on a TV show in 2014 was still considered a step backwards, even for someone like Thornton.

“Billy Bob was the big name. And Fargo started with the idea that movie stars make television,” said Tolman. “When Billy interviewed Fargo, he said that film actors died on television. That was the stigma, and I think we were part of changing that idea.”

It’s not uncommon these days to see famous stars on TV. For example, Regina King recently starred in films and shows such as If Beale Street Could Talk, American Crime, The Leftovers and 227 in the HBO series Watchmen.

Since Fargo, Tolman has appeared in various shows, including The Mindy Project, Archer and The twilight zone. Most recently, she played Jo Evans in the ABC science fiction thriller Emergence, which ended its first season in January.

During our interview, Tolman talked about her early career in advertising and theater, how Fargo changed her life and gave her more choice about her roles and how she “quarantined”. She even teaches me how to make a cappuccino at home with a microwave and a glass.
