Far Cry 6: Release Date, Trailer, Gameplay, and More

Ubisoft unveiled Far Cry 6 at its Ubisoft Forward Livestream last summer and paved the way for a variety of new details to surface. Far Cry 6 stars Breaking Bad actor Giancarlo Esposito, who joined Ubisoft during the showcase to share information about the title’s gameplay and some of the creative decisions Ubisoft made. Details are still fairly scarce, even after a second showing at this year’s Ubisoft Forward, but we do have a good idea about most of the important information regarding this upcoming title.

But with a few months to go until Far Cry 6‘s launch, there are still plenty of details left to uncover. Read on for a look at everything we know — and speculate — about Far Cry 6.

Far Cry 6 release date

Ubisoft confirmed that Far Cry 6 will be releasing on October 7, 2021, for the Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Google Stadia, Amazon Luna, and PC. The game was originally slated for a February 18, 2021 release but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Far Cry 6 platforms

Ubisoft already confirmed the platforms we can expect Far Cry 6 to launch on which includes current and last-gen systems. The full list will be PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Google Stadia.

In a Reddit AMA, Far Cry 6 World Director Benjamin Hall also said that the game’s development team was ensuring it would run well on last-gen hardware. “The team is putting a huge amount of effort into making sure Far Cry runs smoothly on last-gen consoles,” Hall said.

Far Cry 6 trailer

We initially only had one trailer to get us excited for the upcoming game, and while it is a fantastic introduction to the world and villain of the game, we didn’t get any glimpses at actual gameplay. This makes sense as to how they would want to first show off the game since the series has leaned most heavily on strong, well-written, and fully-realized villains since the massively popular Vaas debuted in Far Cry 3.

More details revealed along with the trailer included the fact that Far Cry 6 will tell the story of a dictator named Anton Castillo trying to rule his island nation of Yara as freedom fighters battle to take control of the country. Gamers will play the role of a resistance fighter named Dani Rojas as Castillo uses propaganda to subjugate his people and prepare his son Diego to rule in the future.

In an interview with GameRant, Far Cry 6 narrative director Navid Khavari said the game will be set in the present day but will look like the 1960s because Yara has been “frozen in time” since then. Khavari hinted that everything from the game’s weapons to vehicles will be from the period. The game’s Yara environment was inspired by modern-day Cuba. Khavari said his team was inspired by the island nation and visited Cuba during the four years spent developing Far Cry 6 to get a sense of how they could recreate it.

The latest trailer, showed off at Ubisofoft Forward, is in fact the opening cinematic of the game. This trailer sets the stage of what Yara is like for the people but primarily gives us a better impression of the kind of villain and father Anton Castillo really is. This focus makes sense since the Far Cry series has always prided itself on charismatic and somewhat flamboyant antagonists.

Far Cry 6 gameplay

Ubisoft hasn’t shared many details about Far Cry 6 gameplay, but the game’s screenshots reveal first-person shooting and a variety of locales, ranging from small neighborhoods to urban environments. This is very much in line with how the series has played since the beginning. Based only on the scant images and information we have, we feel safe in assuming that this title will be yet another iteration on the Far Cry formula rather than a total reinvention. We expect a large open world with a range of environments with land, sea, and air vehicles as well as tons of collectibles, crafting, and upgrading.

Far Cry New Dawn

Developers for Far Cry 6 are also putting careful thought into the game’s various systems. According to a Reddit AMA for the game, “Takedowns are definitely back and fully ready for stealth players with plenty of new animations.” Far Cry 6 will also be ditching the weapon-tier system present in Far Cry New Dawn, with one of the game’s developers saying that it “didn’t fit our fantasy and world.” Players will also continue to have a ton of freedom of movement in Far Cry 6. Besides access to vehicles, players will be able to glide from heights using a wingsuit or swing around on a grappling hook.

Also breaking off from previous entries in the Far Cry franchise, Far Cry 6 will not feature human companions. Far Cry 5 had its own set of human and animal characters that players could enlist to help take on bad guys, but Far Cry 6 will exclusively stick to animal friends, called “Amigos.” However, players will also be fighting alongside “like-minded people” throughout the game according to a developer.

Who is the protagonist of Far Cry 6?

Far Cry 6 puts players in control of Dani Rojas, a retired Yaran soldier that joins a team of freedom fighters against Anton Castillo’s reign. Dani is fully voiced and players will choose their gender at the beginning of the game. This direction of making the main character an actual character is new for Far Cry protagonists and could add another layer, making the experience all the more interesting.

Does Far Cry 6 have multiplayer?

Far Cry games have had a strange relationship with multiplayer over the many games, but ever since the games established a formula with Far Cry 3, the multiplayer component has settled on being strictly cooperative. The same will be true for Far Cry 6, which is planned to give players the option to team up with friends in the open world to take on any side activities or just cause mayhem. It seems you won’t be able to do any story missions during a co-op session, which makes sense for teaming up with people at different points in the story.

Will Far Cry 6 have DLC?

During the Ubisoft event, we got some exciting info on what the season pass for the game will include. Primarily, we now know that the three main antagonists of the last numbered games — Far Cry 3‘s Vaas, Far Cry 4‘s Pagin Min, and Far Cry 5‘s Joseph Seed — will be featured in each of the three DLCs. But, unlike their original roles as villains, they are going to be playable characters. The trailer is clearly playing with reality in strange, scary, and creative ways to bring these villains back to life. As the trailer itself states, “The mind is a dangerous place.”

However, that wasn’t the only bit of fan service this trailer showed us. Arguably the most popular expansion of any first-person shooter, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is also included in the season pass.
