Facebook stops letting advertisers target people interested in ‘pseudoscience’
On Facebook, advertisers can no longer target their ads to people interested in “pseudosciences”. The move follows a report from The Markup That is, Facebook even allowed such ads in the middle company-wide efforts Misinformation about the COVID-19 Outbreak circulates on its platforms.
Facebook reportedly rated 78 million users as potentially interested in pseudosciences: beliefs or practices that were mistakenly considered scientific. As part of its investigation, The Markup announced that it was able to target its own ads to these users on both Facebook and Facebook Instagram, with some of the ads approved within minutes.
Facebook confirmed on Thursday that the targeting option was removed to prevent potential abuse.
“This interest category of advertising should have been removed in a previous review and we removed it,” said Rob Leathern, director of product management at Facebook, in a statement.
A spokesman for Facebook added that the company is reviewing the options for targeting ads on one constantly.
