Outstanding plus
Paramount Plus includes thousands of films and TV shows from CBS, Showtime and Paramount Pictures. It also includes new and original movies like The Good Fight, Infinite, and more.
What is Star Trek: Prodigy about?
Star Trek: Prodigy follows a group of young alien aliens who discover an abandoned Starfleet ship, the Protostar. In search of a better future for themselves, they command the ship and embark on a series of adventures.
Unlike previous Star Trek series, none of the Prodigy crew has any flying experience and none of them are members of Starfleet. You must learn to man your new ship while learning the ideals of the Federation and Starfleet. On their heels are two mysterious villains, Diviner and Drednok. While their motives are still unclear, Paramount has revealed that Diviner is the father of one of the runaways, Gwyn.

The series takes place in 2383, after the events of Star Trek: Voyager. And it plays in the Delta Quadrant, like Voyager before it. So our heroes are far from Earth and the Federation. How a Starfleet ship got so far from home and who was in control of it and why remains to be seen.
Star Trek: Prodigy is one of five series in the current iteration of the space exploration franchise. It joins the ongoing Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Lower Decks, as well as the upcoming Star Trek: Stranger Worlds in Paramount’s list of Star Trek shows.
Another animated Star Trek?
Nickelodeon / Paramount Plus
Animated Star Trek shows are nothing new.
Star Trek: The Animated aired over two seasons in 1973 and 1974, and followed the adventures of the original Enterprise crew from the original Star Trek series.
However, Paramount states that Star Trek: Prodigy is the first Star Trek – animated or otherwise – aimed at a younger audience. The original Star Trek: The Animated series was a Saturday morning cartoon, so it might be wise to take this distinction with caution, but the series’ trailer sets it apart from its current counterparts.
Providing some adult humor and references to series history, Lower Decks generally appears to be geared towards an existing Star Trek fan base that has already invested in the franchise. Prodigy has a different tone in addition to its 3D digital animation and distinct aesthetics. It has the character of a series for young viewers and is at least the first Star Trek for younger viewers in this era of the historic franchise.
When and where can you see it?

Star Trek: Prodigy premieres on October 28th with a one-hour season premiere. Later episodes will likely be shorter.
As with other Star Trek shows, new episodes will be available weekly on Paramount Plus.
Paramount has not yet revealed whether we can expect more seasons later.

What to Expect from Star Trek: Prodigy
Nickelodeon / Paramount Plus
In addition to a series trailer, Paramount has revealed some important details about the show. However, some questions still remain as to how Prodigy will fit into the broader Star Trek universe.
Below are some pointers, rumors, and remaining question marks about the upcoming show:
- At least one familiar face (and voice) will appear in Star Trek: Prodigy. Kate Mulgrew, who played Captain Kathryn Janeway in Star Trek: Voyager, will return to voice the iconic character. Or rather, you will be speaking a holographic version of Janeway. The Voyager’s captain serves as the spaceship’s built-in emergency training hologram and guides the young heroes on their journey.
- Robert Beltran, who played Janeway’s second-in-command Chakotay in Voyager, has announced that he will be returning to Prodigy and voicing. We don’t yet know whether it will also be a hologram or whether we will see it again on Earth or elsewhere in the Alpha Quadrant. It is also possible for him to pronounce a different character.
- Other Star Trek actors have voiced their voices in Star Trek: Lower Decks. These include Jonathan Frakes as William Riker, Robert Duncan McNeill as Tom Paris and John de Lancie as Q. And Star Trek: Picard has Frakes in their previous roles as Seven of Nine alongside Jeri Ryan, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner and Jonathan Del Arco , Deanna Troi, Data and Hugh. Will Star Trek: Prodigy feature these or other well-known Trek stars?
- Star Trek: Voyager featured a Starfleet ship trapped in the Delta Quadrant and slowly attempting to return to Earth and the Federation in the Alpha Quadrant. Will the crew of the Protostar’s new crew also feel drawn to the Federation? Will they have the chance to officially join Starfleet with Janeway’s help? Or does your path lead somewhere else?
That’s all we know about Star Trek: Prodigy so far. And even a few things we don’t know, but we look forward to finding out.
You can try it out on Paramount Plus in late October.
