Everything Apple just announced at WWDC 2020: iOS 14, MacOS Big Sur, new Mac chips

Apple’s opening speech on Monday at WWDC 2020, the annual global developer conference, began with Tim Cook speaking in front of the empty auditorium Black Lives Matter and Corona Virus before it started in the announcement of iOS 14 and its redesign of the home screen and new widgets. So far we have also heard about the new updates for iPadOS 14, MacOS Big Sur, TV OS and WatchOS. Public betas start next month and will be delivered in autumn as usual.

But the big news was Apple’s highly anticipated switch from Intel to arm-based chipsA (presumably) metal-optimized graphics processor and other custom accelerator silicon are said to deliver better performance with lower power consumption than before. New systems will be delivered by the end of 2020, and Apple silicon will be introduced on the rest of the Mac line over the next two years.

All Big Sur Apple apps support the new custom Apple processors, and Apple claims that developer support is just a simple recompilation (or at least within a few days). Partners such as Adobe and Microsoft will also be on board with their apps at the start. And the company claims the performance will be great. Rosetta 2 automatically recompiles older apps when you install them. IOS and iPadOS apps and games compiled by Catalyst run natively from day one.

More magic for AirPods! Smartly switching the connection between devices helps us, and AirPods Pro receives spatial audio using a gyroscope and accelerometer to track your head movements. It supports several spatial standards. Apps offer more detailed location tracking options and give developers the ability to show you more detailed information about the objects they’re tracking.

We also saw a preview of that new Apple TV Plus Show, Foundation, based on Isaac Asimov’s classic science fiction book series.

Better multi-user support in TVOS You can pick up where you left off in a game, and it now supports Xbox Elite and Xbox Adaptive controllers. Apple TV Plus has many, many screens on offer.

iOS 14

There are new features for Siri, including a Google Translate-like app for live conversation translation. Messages also get much-needed updates with the ability to pin messages, improve group conversations, and do more searches for Memoji adjustments.

Maps also have new functions, e.g. B. bicycle navigation for more cities and the routing of electric vehicles to alleviate the worry that the juice runs out on the way. CarPlay “revises car keys.” They are now virtual and can be shared! App clips are provided in the App Store for quick access to new apps and links to apps from Safari and others.

Apple borrows a feature from the iPad (and Android phones) Picture-in-picture on iPhone in iOS 14that gives you a floating thumbnail of a video when you switch to your home screen or other app.

For smart homes, the home app offers adaptive lighting, the ability to define activity zones for cameras, and face recognition notifications from your doorbell on all devices.

iPadOS 14

You can find the same redesigned widgets as iOS 14, but iPadOS improves photo navigation with a sidebar. The sidebar design was also integrated into several Apple apps by tapping and dragging. Compact notifications for incoming calls and more don’t hide your screen – this also applies to iOS. The search has been redesigned so that it works from anywhere and works more like Spotlight on the desktop.

And finally, the new Scribble app offers handwriting recognition notes for use with Apple Pencil and the ability to cut and paste smarter and write in text boxes – very Windows 10-like. It can also recognize different languages.

MacOS Big Sur

A full redesign will greet you if you upgrade to the latest version of MacOS, though you’ll be forgiven for being a pretty subtle change. The same iPadOS photo design is used for MacOS, as are many of the app updates we get in iOS and iPadOS. The control center in the menu bar, in the widgets and in the notification center is also more sophisticated.

Mac Catalyst, the tool for porting iOS apps to MacOS, extends some of the features to make it more MacOS-like. Safari can load frequently visited websites and advanced privacy features faster, including more granular controls over how long the permissions you’ve given a website are valid.

WatchOS 7

Customize your Apple Watch face with several complications – customization is also easier – and there are some new faces. You can also share faces. Your body will also appreciate the new dance routines you can use to spice up your workout. At the other end of the spectrum, sleep tracking is added. With the new operating system, the watch can also track your hand wash.
