Elon Musk and Grimes had to change their little son’s name from “X Æ A-12” to “X Æ A-Xii”.
dirt revealed the change Sunday on Instagram. “Have you changed the baby name because of California laws? What’s the baby’s new name?” therealsainti asked her in a comment about a photo that had nothing to do with her baby.
Grimes replied with the new name “X Æ A-Xii” but did not go into the details of the change.
When Grimes replied to another comment, he seemed satisfied with the tweak: “Roman numerals. Looks better, tbh.”
When Musk and Grimes announced the news of their newborn born on May 4 and his name “X Æ A-12”, some indicated that the name on the baby’s official California birth certificate was not accepted by the state as valid California, the location of Musk’s Tesla headquarters.
A California family law attorney told People Magazine that the state does not allow symbols, numbers or Roman numerals on birth certificates. Names must contain Characters from the English alphabet. Hyphens are allowed, but the “Æ” may result in the certificate being refused and the parents having to resubmit it.
However, it appears that the “Æ” is standing around. As for number 12, musk and grimes can get away with “Xii” instead of the Roman numeral “XII”.
The pronunciation probably stays the same. musk revealed how to say his son’s name in Joe Rogan’s podcast earlier this month.
“First of all, my partner is the one who mostly invented the name,” Musk said about Grimes. “I mean it’s just X, the letter X, um, and the ‘Æ’ is pronounced, ‘Ash,’ and then A-12 is my contribution.” He continued that A-12 stood for “Archangel 12, the forerunner of the SR-71, the coolest airplane ever”.
According to one interpretation, it all boils down to saying “Ex Ash A Twelve”. Another suggestion is “Ex Aye Eye”.
Musk announced the news of his new son on May 5 on Twitter and later shared a picture of him with the little guy.
Speculation whirled around the meaning of the baby’s unique name. Grimes entered a day later to explain: X is the “unknown variable”. Æ is their “elven spelling of the AI”. A-12 is the “precursor of SR-17” – later corrected by Musk SR-71, apparently the couple’s favorite plane.
