Air pollution is not a joke. Everyone who lives in a large metropolis, especially in Asia, knows the dangers of a high AQI level. In November, New Delhi, where I live, turns to the pollution control center. These dangerous levels of air pollution are associated with potential health problems such as coughs, colds, chest pain, asthma, and more. In fact, long-term exposure to air pollution in India kills over 1.67 million people each year.
With this in mind, air purifiers have become the norm. They are no longer considered an optional luxury. Personally, I installed one in every room in my apartment.
Xiaomi may be responsible for democratizing clean air, but the Dyson Pure Hot and Cool is on the other end of the spectrum. The Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 3 is a useful box that only serves one purpose. Dyson’s solution, on the other hand, is to create an air purifier that enhances the visual identity of your living space while doubling as a fan and space heater.
Are the design, functionality, and most importantly, the air purification function of the Dyson air purifier sufficient to justify the sky-high price tag? We find it in the Android Authority Dyson Pure Hot and Cool Cryptomic HP06 Air Purifier Review.

Design: Make a statement
The Dyson Pure Hot and Cool Cryptomic redesigns the design of the HP04 model we tested earlier this year, and for good reason. Dyson’s latest version isn’t a major redesign. It’s more of a subtle update with just one new feature. In fact, the only real design change you’ll discover is the new matte gold color.
While I’m not a huge fan of bling personally, the shade chosen is very subtle. In my apartment it is not disgusting.
Unlike the Mi Air Purifier 3, however, this is not an air purifier that you can discreetly stow away. The design of the Cryptomic continues to make a statement. The large, bladeless fan commands you to place it in the front and center, while the perforated mesh filter looks modern enough.
The Dyson Pure Hot and Cool is designed as a statement instead of being hidden in a corner.
The air purifier is about 30 inches tall and can swing freely with an air distribution of up to 350 degrees. However, you can limit this to just 45 degrees with the app. In addition, the tilt base offers an additional degree of freedom to adjust the airflow exactly where you want it.
The Dyson Pure Hot and Cool Cryptomic is primarily an air purifier. By default, the moment you turn it on, it creates a steady stream of cool breeze.
In fact, it’s a bit of a surprise how well it works just as a fan. The Dyson is more than capable of keeping you cool at full force in an average sized living room. However, it can get quite loud at just above level 5 in the settings, so you might want to keep it quieter.
The other mode, as the name Hot and Cool suggests, is active heating. In cooling mode, the Dyson simply circulates the surrounding air. The heating modification, on the other hand, involves ceramic plates that can generate a warm and cozy breeze.
With the upcoming winters here in Delhi, I increased the temperature of the Dyson Pure Hot and Cool Cryptomic to keep my living room at a comfortable 24 degrees.
The heating mechanism in the Dyson Pure Hot and Cool is very effective in heating up or maintaining the temperature in a living space.
I found the heating mechanism surprisingly quick and effective – – An important feature in Asian markets where central heating is more or less absent. In contrast to old-school space heaters or oil-filled radiators, the Dyson not only heats a living space much faster. It also has none of the accompanying smell or stuffy feel which is a definite asset in my books.
Finally, all essential functions can be controlled via the supplied remote control. The color was matched to the gold base of the filter. Like the HP04, the remote control is magnetically attached to the top of the air purifier and powered by a CR2032 battery which should allow for long battery life.
How well does the Dyson Pure Hot and Cool Cryptomic work as an air purifier?
I suppose there is something to be said about the genius of creating a product that fulfills three different roles versus an air purifier with one function, but I digress.
It’s easy to forget that the Dyson Pure Hot and Cool is an air purifier too. In fact, this is its main function, and as you would expect from a premium product, it does the job very well. I had the opportunity to test the air purifier while New Delhi was going through a severe period of air pollution well above the 1000 AQI mark. It’s dangerous in every way.
The Dyson, performed with serenity. It did an excellent job of keeping AQI levels below the 40-50 mark during the worst of pollution. After the air pollution subsided, this value could be reduced to an average of 15.
The air purifier has two filters to get the job done. This includes a HEPA glass filter and an activated carbon filter, with which 99.7 percent of air pollutants can be cleaned.
New to Cryptomic is the ability to remove formaldehyde from the air. The chemical can be irritating to skin and eyes. It’s found in materials like particle board, plywood, as well as paint.
Dyson claims to use a material called cryptomelane as a catalytic coating to filter out formaldehyde. Coincidentally, the name Cryptomic comes from there. Unfortunately, I have no way of measuring the effectiveness of the filtration. I have to take the company’s word for it for the combined volatile organic compound readings.
What I can measure, however, is the efficiency and speed with which the PM2.5 and PM10 levels are reduced. With ambient PM2.5 values around 210 and PM10 values around 114, the air purifier only needed around 40 minutes to reduce this value to around 30 µg per cubic meter. In the meantime, it took another half an hour for the digital display to read PM2.5 between 10 and 15.
I tested this several times during the reporting period using both the built-in display and a dedicated air quality monitor. The results remained consistent over several runs.
Dyson App Control
Dyson’s air purifier app goes a step beyond the essentials. Not only can it control every function of the Dyson Pure Hot and Cool Cryptomic, but it also offers nice details like the ability to adjust the exact angle of the air purifier.
The app also shows detailed data on air pollution and tracks the exact levels of each type of pollutant. It essentially replicates the physical remote control and adds some nice touches to improve the user experience.
The Dyson also integrates very well into the Alexa ecosystem of smart home devices. Almost any function can be controlled with your voice and routines added, making it great for automation.
Dyson claims the Google Assistant integration is also in the pipeline, but I wasn’t able to test it at the time of publication.
Is the Dyson Pure Hot and Cool Cryptomic Air Purifier a Good Value?
Available for Rs. 61,900 in India and $ 749.99 in the US, the Dyson Pure Hot and Cool Cryptomic is an expensive product. There really aren’t two options. Indeed, it wouldn’t be unfair to call Dyson the apple of air purifiers. You pay a premium for the design and branding.
However, the company secures the premium price with a product that does exactly what it advertises. The cooling and heating functions are just right, as is the air purification.
The additional filtering for formaldehyde? Not as much. While it’s a nice feature, most households will never be high enough to be a real problem.
The Dyson Pure Hot and Cool Cryptomic HP06 is a great cleaner and an even better statement. However, if you are looking for a new high-end air purifier in the market that doubles as a space heater, I highly recommend that you save a little money and get the Dyson Pure Hot and Cool HP04 instead. Aside from the controversial benefits of formaldehyde filtration, there is little difference between the two models. The HP04 offers almost identical functions at a slightly lower price.
Dyson Hot and Cool Cryptomic HP06 air purifier
The Dyson Hot and Cool Cryptomic gives a good product a fresh touch. The air purifier is an improved version of the HP04 that can now also filter out formaldehyde. While the need for this is debatable, the full package caters if you’re looking to upgrade from an older model or just want an air purifier that can also act as a fan and heater.
