Does HMD have a Xiaomi rival?
- HMD has announced the Nokia 1.4 smartphone.
- It is an entry-level smartphone with Android 10 Go Edition.
HMD Global sometimes struggled to keep up with Chinese brands like Xiaomi and Realme when it came to budget phones. However, is this the case with his latest smartphone?
The company just announced the Nokia 1.4 in Europe and the UK and is offering some upgrades over the Nokia 1.3. For starters, the screen size has increased from 5.71 inches HD + to 6.5 inches HD + while the battery size has increased from 3,000 mAh to 4,000 mAh. Unfortunately, the Nokia 1.4 opts for a non-removable battery compared to its predecessor.
The other major upgrade is the addition of a 2-megapixel macro lens while keeping the 8-megapixel primary camera and 5-megapixel selfie shooter from the older phone. Thankfully, HMD turned to Google Camera Go for its camera app requirements. The app advertises a portrait and a night mode.

Other notable features are a very light Snapdragon 215 processor (quad-core Cortex-A53), a fingerprint scanner on the back, 16 GB to 64 GB of expandable storage, 1 GB to 3 GB of RAM, a micro USB port and Android 10 Go Edition. You also get Bluetooth 4.2, a Google Assistant key, and an FM receiver.
Expect € 99 or € 89.99 for the 1GB / 16GB Nokia 1.4 when it goes on sale. The colors Fjord, Charcoal and Dusk are offered.
How does that compare to Xiaomi? The Redmi 9A for 99 euros or 99 euros offers a more modern Helio G25 processor, at least 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of expandable storage and a larger battery. However, HMD’s phone offers a macro camera.
