Do you use custom ROMs on your Android devices?
One of the coolest things about Android is the ability to install custom ROMs on your device and replace your standard version of Android with a third-party version. Traditionally made by groups of enthusiasts, these custom ROMs come with a variety of cool features.
We don’t seem to hear much about custom ROMs these days, although offerings like CopperheadOS, LineageOS, Paranoid Android, and Pixel Experience are still alive and well. So are you still using custom ROMs on your Android devices? Let us know below.
There are many reasons to use a custom Android ROM, the main one being so that you can upgrade your device to a newer version of Android if the device manufacturer has given up. This was a major problem in the early days of Android when an OS update wasn’t even guaranteed, and it’s still a notable challenge today. Many custom ROMs also offer some features that are not available in Android and / or official Android skins.
We’ve also seen some ROMs add a privacy or security focus, add extra functionality in that regard, or even remove Google integration. The / e / OS distribution is an example of the latter.
However, we can think of a few reasons to avoid custom ROMs, with the installation process being the biggest hurdle. Installing a ROM on your phone or tablet is no trivial matter for the average consumer.
These ROMs also don’t have official support, so it’s not uncommon to see hardware problems, software problems, and a lack of polish with some distributions. Some apps (e.g. bank customers) also have problems with custom ROMs, but these can be fixed with workarounds.
