Do you think LG should sell its smartphone division?

We don’t need to rehash LG’s familiar struggles in the smartphone industry. The company has faltered for years, losing sales, losing market share and losing consumer confidence. This week, a memo from the company’s top tier suggested exploring “all the options” for its mobile division. This has sparked rumors of a sell-off to another smartphone company.

While LG does not want this option, it may be a valid option. By selling all or part of the company’s cellular business, it could focus on specific market segments. LG’s strategy apparently reflects this thought as well. It is already outsourcing the production of its budget cell phones to other companies. This allowed the company to build more adventurous flagships, including the LG Wing and the yet to be confirmed LG Rollable.

For a well-established company like LG, selling to a competitor shouldn’t be an option. The company remains a force in the US market, and while it may seem like a distant memory, it has produced a number of excellent phones in the past. In principle, it is still possible to regain its former glory.
