Dirt 5 rally racing game announced for Xbox Series X
Microsoft revealed the first details for a number of games that will be released in the coming year Xbox Series X console On Thursday we saw gameplay material for the next-gen system for the first time. The most important (at least for roadshow) is Dirt 5, the newest in Codemaster’s longstanding rally racing series.
We only saw about a minute of gameplay, but it gave us great insight into the kind of races we can expect from Dirt 5. In the first scene, sports cars like you Aston Martin Vantage, a Porsche 911 GT3 and a first generation Ford Mustang slide on an ice rink in an urban area. There’s also a scene where Ariel nomads and off-road buggies ride on a muddy, jumpy track. A split second video shows the same route in several different seasons.
There will also be more traditional rally cars like the new Citroën C3 WRC and classics like the Ford Escort Cosworth and Lancia Stratos. The trailer shows different weather conditions like thunderstorm and snow, and the physics for things like mud and dirt looks incredible. The game itself looks stunning overall, with wonderful lighting effects and detailed car models. There will also be realistic damage modeling, but no word on how much damage actually affects your car’s driving behavior.
Dirt 5 will have 10 different locations with over 70 unique routes. There will be a fully elaborated career mode with voices from Troy Baker and Nolan North of Uncharted and The Last Of Us. The game will also support local split-screen play for up to four players, including offline career mode, and Codemasters says it also has detailed photo mode and Dirts “deepest paint editor ever used”. Technically, Dirt 5 runs on Xbox Series X at 120 frames per second and supports 4K Ultra HD and HDR.
What we don’t see here is some kind of traditional point-to-point rally race. The last dirt rally games have focused more on the arcade side of things and focused on rallycross and the like, with the dirt rally games taking the sim coat. We may see a Dirt Rally 3.0 game in the near future, but it is likely that Dirt 5 will at least have a regular rally mode.
According to Codemasters, Dirt 5 will be released for the current Xbox One system in October and it will be a launch title for the Xbox Series X, which is expected to hit stores in late 2020. We haven’t heard anything specific yet, Dirt 5 should also be available for the PlayStation 5, which is slated for release in late 2020. It will probably also be released for the PC.
