What is cowboy bebop?

Sunrise’s original anime series debuted in Japan in 1998. The 26-part series takes place in the late 21st century. The earth is now uninhabitable, but most of the earth’s solar system has been colonized. In this series, bounty hunters named cowboys roam the solar system to stop bad purchases in order to collect their fee. This series focuses on a group of “cowboys” on their ship called the Bebop.

The show combines elements of science fiction and western films, with some detective crime noirs. It was definitely a huge influence on the 2002 live-action TV series Firefly. It also had perhaps one of the best soundtracks of all-time for an anime series. Composer Yoko Kanno created jazz music for the show, which was highly acclaimed. In 2001, the show became a cult hit in the US due to its debut on Adult Swim cable television.

What is the live-action Netflix series Cowboy Bebop about?

The live-action version of the show was first announced in 2017, and production of the show began in New Zealand in 2019. The first episode of the 10-part series is adapted by Christopher Yost, who previously wrote scripts for the TV show The Mandalorian and the films Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok. The 10-part series is directed by Alex Garcia Lopez and Michael Katleman. The anime show’s original composer, Yoko Kanno, will also do the soundtrack for the live-action series. Shinichirō Watanabe, who directed the original anime series, serves as an advisor on the live-action version.

In October 2019, after filming six episodes of the series, production was suspended for several months after lead actor John Cho sustained a serious knee injury on the set. There were further delays due to the Covid-19 outbreak in 2020. Filming for the rest of the series began again in September 2020.


Who is in the cast?

The main cast of the show include:

  • John Cho (Star Trek) plays the main character of Spike Spiegel, a bounty hunter who was born on Mars and has some seriously spiky hair.
  • Mustafa Shakir (Luke Cage) plays Jet Black, Spike’s partner who has a cybernetic arm.
  • Daniella Pineda (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) plays Faye Valentine, another member of Spike’s bounty hunting team. She seems young but in fact she has been in suspended animation for over 50 years.
  • Alex Hassell (The Boys) plays Vicious, Spike’s ex-partner and now his main sworn enemy.
  • Elena Satine (The Gifted) plays Julia, a former romantic partner of Spike and Vicious.

In addition, the show will also feature One, the corgi dog, who is the bebop crew’s unofficial mascot.
