The daily number of Corona virus Cases continue to increase worldwide, with the World Health Organization reporting the highest number of registered cases within 24 hours on Sunday. The increase led the pandemic to reach another important milestone as the total number of confirmed cases exceeded 10 million with 500,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins’ COVID-19 database. Over 5 million are listed as restored.
In the United States, regional increases in the south and west led to a weekly record high, according to an analysis of the Atlantic’s COVID tracking project. The country is responsible for more than a quarter of all cases and deaths. Daily deaths continued to decrease in the United States, despite the fact that the cases have reached new highs, a phenomenon that is currently not observed in other countries with increasing cases.
“This is a very serious situation,” said Secretary of Health Alex Azar during a Sunday appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press. “People as individuals have to act responsibly. We have to create social distance, we have to wear our faces when we are in environments where we cannot achieve social distance.”
There is evidence that new cases appear in younger age groups – those with a lower risk of dying from COVID-19. “We have received reports from our governors that most cases are 35 years and younger,” said Azar. A delay between deaths and reporting could also lead to an increase in deaths in July.
Two other countries report a significant increase in daily infections: Brazil and India. The former has had over 1.3 million confirmed cases and over 57,000 deaths. India currently has the fourth highest number of cases behind the United States, Brazil and Russia, but daily cases are increasing. Almost 20,000 cases were reported on Sunday.

On Wednesday, he reiterated the inequality between the first month of the outbreak, in which 10,000 cases were reported to WHO, and the current month, in which 4 million cases were reported.
“This is a sobering reminder that as we continue to research vaccines and therapeutics, we are desperately responsible for doing everything we can to suppress transmission and save lives,” said Ghebreyesus during the press conference on June 24th.
