TL; DR

  • Google announced today that Chrome OS updates will soon come at a faster pace.
  • Chrome OS users can expect a new update every four weeks starting in the fourth quarter of this year.
  • This schedule corresponds to the new schedule for the Chrome browser itself.

Chrome OS just gets better (and more popular) every year. One of the main reasons for this is Google’s pretty quick update schedule for the desktop operating system.

However, Google is now increasing the stakes. In a blog post today, the company announced that Chrome OS updates will be coming even faster than before. Starting in Q4 2021, you will see updates every four weeks – or basically once a month.

Interestingly, this announcement follows an earlier announcement that the Chrome browser itself would have a four-week update schedule. That schedule begins in the third quarter of 2021. In other words, by the end of this year, both the Chrome browser and Chrome OS would receive monthly updates.

Because of this consistent schedule, Google will actually skip one of the expected Chrome OS updates. Google jumps from build M94 straight to M96 and skips M95. You can see the updated timetable here.

Note that this new schedule does not apply to business and education systems. These systems will have an update every six months. Google promises more details shortly.
