Starting July 16, census participants will conduct personal interviews for households that have not yet responded to the 2020 U.S. Census. The company will begin in six cities, including New Orleans, Kansas City, Missouri and Boise, Idaho, and will expand in the United States. Although the office had originally planned follow-ups for non-responses on May 13, the date had to be changed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. If necessary, enumerators wear masks and practice protocols for social distancing.
In addition to navigating the coronavirus outbreak, the 2020 census has been unique in recent years as it is the first time that census iPhones use iPhones to conduct interviews and enter census information. In particular, enumerators have the iPhone 8 to read their prepared script, check their case list, log their hours and expenses, and connect to the help center if they run into problems.
To date, the self-response rate of the census is 61.8%, so that, according to the office, around 56 million households are still personally visiting. For those who want to avoid a visit from the census, there is still time to send paper answers, submit answers online at 2020census.gov, or answer by phone at (844) 330-2020.
