Carl Pei makes much ado about Nothing
- Carl Pei, co-founder of OnePlus, has introduced his new startup called Nothing.
- The company will launch smart devices in the first half of the year.
OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei left the smartphone maker last year and later confirmed that he was working on a new company. Now Pei has confirmed that the new company is called Nothing.
“Nothing is the mission to remove barriers between people and technology in order to create a seamless digital future,” reads an excerpt from a press release from the company. What will the company then actually offer?
Well, the company stated in the press release that its first “smart devices” would hit the market in the first half of the year.
While it didn’t reveal anything more specific, Pei told it beforehand Wired that the company is involved in audio and that several products will be launched in 2021. The managing director added at the time that the new company was about more than just headphones.
Pei told The edge that Nothing would offer products in multiple categories and aim to build an ecosystem of products.
“The ultimate vision of seamlessly connecting everything can only happen when several categories of products are connected,” the OnePlus co-founder was quoted as saying. He added that the company plans to make most of its money in hardware rather than software subscriptions, with previous speculation pointing to a music service.
In a shot at the former OnePlus company, Pei also suggested that Nothing would not “re-label” other people’s products.
It’s also worth noting that Nothing’s European boss is David Sanmartin, who was most recently the European e-commerce director of OnePlus, according to his LinkedIn profile.
