It is probably the best that we do not continue to learn about Vehicle programs blocked due to the corona virus pandemic – it only strengthens the “what could have been” feelings. But unfortunately it sounds as planned BMW i8 Successor is now off the table.
According to a report from Germany Manager magazine BMW provided the replacement at the end of April Corona virus is causing so many companies to save money. Low-priced sports cars are generally not the best investment at any time, and since the world is concerned about the future of the global economy, a sports car at BMW has probably received negative reactions. The cost of the report is the main reason why the automaker scrapped the program. Of course we don’t know if this is the case, but it is likely.
We probably have a preview of the next sports car in the form of the Vision M Next BMW showed a design study last summer. The wild style looked edgy, nervous, and looked like a nice leap forward from the already futuristic i8. A turbocharged in-line four-cylinder and electric motors worked together to deliver 600 horsepower, and the machine could run 62 miles on electricity alone, making it a plug-in hybrid in one fell swoop. The technology it contained – such as facial recognition for unlocking the car – was typical of a future-oriented concept.
A BMW representative emphasized that the Vision M Next “was not a concept car for a particular model, but a design study that was shown at various motor shows last year” and declined to comment further on the speculation.
However, we will probably never know what has become of an i8 replacement. At least we have numerous other M models that we can comfort.
