Asus Zenfone 8 teaser hints at a farewell to the flippy camera

Asus Zenfone 8 teaser

  • Asus teased a hole punch for its Zenfone 8 series.
  • This would be a major departure from the previous flip camera devices.

Asus caused a sensation in 2019 with the Zenfone 6 and offered a flagship with a unique folding camera mechanism. This flip setup allowed you to take selfies with the rear cameras while getting a correct full screen experience.

The company followed the same formula for last year’s Zenfone 7 range, but it looks like Asus is pointing to a more traditional camera setup for the Zenfone 8 family. The Company Posted An online video showing a phone design with a hole cut out (see image above) while indicating a high refresh rate screen.

It is unclear whether this cutout will be shown on all Zenfone 8 devices or only on the “mini” version. But it sure sounds like Asus is at least talking about the mini / compact version.

Even so, the flip camera setup was a legitimately useful feature that allowed for higher quality selfies and selfie videos, as well as panoramas without moving the phone. However, one of the downsides to such a versatile design is that water resistance is a major challenge. We hope Asus gets a solid IP rating if it actually does without the funky camera.

It is also theoretically possible that this is just a placeholder design and not representative of the end product. We previously saw Asus mail out a phone-shaped plastic cutout that did not have a hole cut as part of the press invitations for the launch of Zenfone 8. So we just have to wait until May 12th to get the official details.

Would you ditch the Zenfone family’s flip camera setup if the phones were waterproof instead? Let us know via the poll above.
