Asus’ latest Chromebox is fanless and built tough
Asus came to CES with a lot of new products, but the latest could be important for businesses and many people who need to work from home. The company introduced a fanless Chromebox that not only offers a quiet Chrome OS desktop but also withstands some of the toughest conditions.
Thanks to the router-like aluminum housing, the fanless Chromebox can run everything from a Celeron 5205U entry-level processor to an Intel Core i7 of the 10th generation without noise, according to Asus. High-end versions can operate up to three 4K monitors. At the same time, the case is tough enough to hold up in factories and other “rough” commercial areas, even when mounted on a monitor or wall.

The Asus Chrome OS computer is also versatile. It takes up to 16 GB of RAM, and you can choose between eMMC storage (up to 64 GB) or SSD (up to 256 GB). USB-A and USB-C 3.2 ports offer you a choice of peripherals. There are also plenty of additional ports available, including HDMI, Ethernet, a microSD slot, and even an older RS-232 serial port. This is for businesses with legacy equipment as well as employees using their home setups.
The fanless Chromebox should be available starting February at a price of $ 399, Asus said. That’s not a trivial price to pay when you can get more powerful traditional PCs for the money, but the company is clearly betting that the company crowd will pay more for the rugged design and the perks of Chrome OS for security and updates.
