- Asus has confirmed that the next ROG phone is called the ROG phone 5.
- It also revealed that a Tencent-branded model is in the works.
We all expected the Asus ROG Phone 4 to hit the market later this year, but the first leaked images suggested that the Taiwanese brand might be skipping a number this year. Now Asus has confirmed Weibo (h / t: MySmartPrice) that this is actually the case.
The Weibo posts confirm the name of the ROG Phone 5 while also showing that a variant of the Tencent brand is in the works. Check out the machine translated posts below.
This isn’t the first time a smartphone brand has skipped number four as OnePlus has also switched from OnePlus 3 and 3T to OnePlus 5. For what it’s worth, number four is considered an unfortunate number in several Asian countries. It is unclear if Asus is skipping the number because of this.
Nor would this be the first time we’ve seen a ROG Phone variant with Tencent support, as we’ve seen before with the ROG Phone 2 and 3. These variants are usually cheaper than the standard ROG Phone models, but they are generally limited to China. Either way, the confirmation of the ROG Phone 5 name suggests that a start is in sight.
We’re expecting a Snapdragon 888 chipset, lots of RAM, and lots of storage in the top-end model, while leaked images point to a secondary screen on the back as well. You can check out all of the notable rumors and leaks on our ROG Phone 5 Rumors Hub.
