Apple TV Plus could get a lot more content.
According to a new report by BloombergThe iPhone manufacturer has “informed Hollywood studios about licensing older content” and has already acquired the rights to some older TV shows and films to expand its young streaming service.
The report does not mention which studios Apple met, which films or shows it bought, or when they may be available on its platform. However, it is noted that Apple “has not yet acquired large franchises or blockbusters for its back catalog.”
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Apple TV Plus was launched last November and costs $ 4.99 per month. There is a wide selection of original shows such as The Morning Show with Jennifer Aniston and See with Jason Momoa as well as films like The Banker with Samuel L. Jackson and Anthony Mackie. The service recently added an OprahTalks show about COVID-19 with Oprah Winfrey and Defending Jacob, a new series with Chris Evans.
Trying to lag behind older shows and films would shift the focus from exclusive originals, but make Apple TV Plus more competitive than Netflix. Disney Plus and upcoming streaming war starters like HBO max and peacock.
It could also be an incentive to pay people for the service Apple gives away by buying new hardware for a year.
