Apple news: AirTags still MIA, plus iPhone 13 rumors

Apple AirTags model

This week we heard more rumors on the Apple news about the “imminent” launch of Apple’s Tile-like trackers known as AirTags. However, we’ve been hearing AirTags just around the corner for over a year. Will they ever take off or are they the new AirPower?

In other Apple news, we heard a lot of rumors about the iPhone 13, some news about the Apple Car, rumors about Apple’s AR glasses, store closings across the UK, and some sluggish sales for the smallest iPhone 12.

Please see the Apple News summary below for the latest information.

Last week’s top Apple news:

  • Leakers say AirTags are coming, but we’ve heard it all before: This week, the frequent Apple spills Ming-Chi Kuo and Jon Prosser said Apple AirTags are coming earlier this year. However, we’ve been hearing this for over a year and are slowly becoming skeptical. In Kuo’s case, he said AirTags would be coming very soon in January 2020 so you can understand our skepticism.
  • iPhone 13 Pro models could eventually have 120 Hz displays: According to The ElecThe two expected “Pro” models of the iPhone 13 series could have a refresh rate of 120 Hz. This could be possible if the rumor that Samsung will only supply Apple with LTPO OLED displays is true. One thing is certain: sooner rather than later, Apple will be on the ball with the trend towards high refresh rates.
  • LiDAR scanning can be done on any iPhone 13 device: According to DigiTimesIt is possible that every device in the iPhone main series will have a LiDAR scanner this year. In the iPhone 12 series, only the iPhone 12 Pro and the 12 Pro Max have this function. It would certainly be neat if Apple could bring the technology to the vanilla iPhone 13 and (we suppose) the iPhone 13 Mini and still keep consumer costs down. However, according to Ming-Chi Kuo, the lenses of iPhone cameras will not see significant improvements until 2022.
  • Hyundai confirms the existence of Apple Car: in the a statement that responds to rumorsThe automaker Hyundai confirmed that it is in early talks with Apple to develop an Apple-branded vehicle. However, the statement was quickly reset to be much more vague and even the reference to Apple was removed. Regardless of a Bloomberg The report suggests the car won’t be ready for at least five years. So we have enough time to speculate.
  • AR glasses are moving forward, rumor mill says: Together with AirTags, we heard about Apple’s Augmented Reality (AR) glasses for a long time. According to a new report from DigiTimes (about MacRumors) the glasses that have long been rumored have now entered the “second development phase”. Maybe that would be cool if we knew how many development phases there would be.
  • Apple closes all UK stores: After British Prime Minister Boris Johnson declared a nationwide lockdown, Apple closed all Apple stores in Great Britain. At first Apple tried to offer an online-only service (where you buy a product online and then pick it up at a store) but now all stores are completely closed. As part of this change, all vacation returns must be made online rather than in-store, which is sure to be disappointing for some people.
  • Call for results planned for the first quarter of 2021: Apple will be running its quarterly earnings call on January 27th. During these calls, Apple shares statistics on how much money it is making and how successful its various product lines are. Expect a lot of talk about how good the iPhone 12 sales are, but with no hard numbers to back it up. Except for one model …
  • iPhone 12 Mini Sales Not So Hot: According to sales by third-party analyst firm CIRP, the iPhone 12 Mini is selling in very poor numbers compared to the rest of the product range. The data suggests that the iPhone 12 Mini represented only 6% of iPhone 12 sales in the past few months. That’s not a good sign for people who love small phones.
