Apple data reveals iPhone loyalty vastly varied across 2019 and 2020
According to data released during Apple’s test with Epic Games, between 12% and 26% of iPhone users switched to another device between Q3 2019 and Q3 2020. Apple doesn’t mention Android by name, but presumably these users are switching to Android devices.
The Data (discovered by Android headquarters) comes from Apple’s own market research and shows how loyal consumers were to the company between 2019 and 2020. What is interesting, however, is how these numbers differed over the course of the year.
In the third quarter of 2019, 19% of iPhone users were looking for another device. But between Q1 2020 and Q2 2020, more than a quarter of iPhone users jumped up. This is especially interesting given that the iPhone 12 series debuted in the third quarter. It suggests that iPhone users will be more likely to give up iOS for Android right before a new iPhone release.
However, iPhone users looking for alternatives could also be due to the economic impact of the pandemic. Multiple Android devices are much cheaper than iPhones, especially if users don’t need Apple-specific benefits.

Despite those outliers, iPhone loyalty surged back to 88% in Q3 2020, likely driven by strong iPhone 12 sales. The series remained the most lucrative line of equipment in early 2021. In particular, the three best-selling smartphones in the first quarter of 2021 were iPhone 12 devices.
What about Android users moving to iOS?
It is unclear how many users are switching to iOS from Android and other mobile platforms. Without this data, we can’t really tell which side is benefiting more.
But even after their own research, some users are not loyal to the Google platform. In a recent survey on our website, almost a quarter of our readers would switch to an iPhone if they were given one for free. However, almost 43% would not consider this step at all.
